Holding the 57th Annual Conference of the Council on Foundations in Pittsburgh seemed particularly appropriate. For one thing, Pittsburgh is the home of Heinz (57 varieties) family philanthropy. For another, both Pittsburgh and the Council seem to have discovered new directions. After years of depression, Pittsburgh has reinvented itself as the first green-built city of the US, while the Council, under the guidance of its new president Steve Gunderson, is also charting a new course.
