'Beyond Aid' is the theme of a conference being held in Ghana this April. I interpret this to mean not that 'aid is finished' but that there has been a radical reappraisal of the way effective support for the poor in the poorest countries is provided. The implication is that foundations, NGOs, companies, governments -- in fact an alliance of interested parties – should become the vanguard of efforts to go beyond aid.

Alliance magazine, focusing on such innovation, aims to give voice to those of us wishing to bring it about.

Alliance is editorially independent with an editorial board of the highest calibre. My organization, CAF, will act as facilitator. CAF's contribution, measured in cash and commitment, will reflect our determination to collect and spread the new knowledge worldwide.

Fortunately we have already been joined in this enterprise by an alliance of friends from around the world. But we need more of you to support us in this crusade, particularly in these very early days.

Together I believe we will create a unique and powerful vehicle in the service of those many, many people around the world who suffer so much -- the beneficiaries.
