March 2010: Small grants
In general, grantmakers seem to be moving towards making larger grants. What is the value of small grants? What is their unique contribution to the grantmaker's toolkit? How much is the trend away from small grants due to the difficulty of assessing the impact of very small grants? And how much to the need to cut operational costs and to look leaner and more effective, exacerbated by the present economic crisis. Will we see an increased tendency for funders to use regranting intermediaries to make small grants for them? These are some of the issues that will be looked at in the March 2010 issue of Alliance. Guest editor will be Chet Tchozewski of Global Greengrants Fund.
June 2010: Rethinking scale
For social investors, catalysing large-scale change continues to be uncharted territory. Finding the accupunture points that can help solve complex market and institutional failures is not an easy task. Change may involve manoeuvring in the complex world of politics; supporting large, and often turbulent, social and popular movements; and confronting powerful forces in the economy. As the debate on scale moves beyond helping enterprises to grow, what are the options for foundations and social investors? These are some of the issues that will be covered in the June 2010 issue of Alliance. Guest editor will be Alejandro Litovsky, Director of the Pathways to Scale Program at Volans in London.
