December 2010: Social justice philanthropy revisted

Many funders set out to fight injustice, but end up tackling the symptoms rather than the root causes. Achieving lasting change in society is no easy task. There is a growing literature on this work, but most of it lacks clarity and rigour. While acknowledging a variety of ways to address injustice, this special feature will try to establish a set of necessary conditions for what philanthropy for social justice means. It will look at social justice philanthropy in terms of three stages: an analysis of the unjust situation, the design of the grantmaking strategy, and the evaluation of that strategy. Finally, it looks at how social justice funders have defended their institutions and their grantees from attack.

Guest editor will be Christopher Harris, formerly with the Ford Foundation.
