Banks and philanthropy advice: what’s happening in emerging markets?

1 September 2010
Alliance magazine

As we have seen throughout this special feature, major financial institutions and wealth advisers in Western Europe and the US are increasingly beginning to offer their clients philanthropy advice services, though all our contributors seem to agree that overall the amount on offer is very small compared to the actual amount of philanthropy. What is happening in emerging market countries, Alliance asked a number of people either active in philanthropy or from the banks themselves.

‘The adviser should play the role of an educator or a coach in supporting the decision-making of the donor,’ says Marcos Kisil of IDIS (Brazil). As more and more donors, especially substantial ones, want to be more closely involved in their giving, there has been increasing demand for the services of professional advisers to provide the ‘coaching’ that Kisil is talking about. But advisers don’t have godlike impartiality. In addition to knowledge of the sector, they bring their own values and preconceptions.

On 16 June, Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett (pictured) publicly invited US billionaires to pledge the majority of their wealth to charity. The Giving Pledge is a matter of a moral commitment to give; it will not involve pooling money or supporting a particular set of causes or organizations. The hope is that the movement will expand to other parts of the world. I am in the business of wanting philanthropy to grow and so I am, in principle, greatly encouraged by the increase in the numbers of new philanthropists. According to World Wealth Report 2010, produced by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch, the very wealthy (global ‘high-net-worth individuals’) have amassed fortunes estimated at $39 trillion, and continue to get richer and become more numerous. From this group, there is an increased interest in philanthropy; specifically in channelling their wealth into philanthropic purposes during their own lifetime.

My most memorable encounter with a donor client happened around ten years ago, in my native town of Krasnodar in the south of Russia. Briefly, Krasnodar is a 300-year-old provincial city near the Black Sea, very conservative, very religious and deeply rooted in the black soil on which it was built. The potential client, a heavily built, grim-looking man, was a wealthy agricultural ‘oligarch’, a local entrepreneur.

There is a famous Peanuts cartoon that hangs in the offices of many philanthropy advisers that ends with the punchline: ‘I want to be a great philanthropist with someone else’s money!’ The philanthropy advice market is beginning to take off, but there is still a long way to go in terms of clarity about what different types of adviser offer, what motivates them, and what kind of advice might be right for donors at different stages in their giving careers.

As I look back over 20-plus years of work with social entrepreneurs and their organizations, I often wonder where I got sidetracked into thinking that success meant the entrepreneur scaling up his or her venture so that it achieved massive impact on national and international policy and practice.
