According to data collected in 2004, non-profit institutions in New Zealand engage (as volunteers and paid staff) almost as many people as the country’s entire manufacturing industry, and more than transportation and communications, construction and utilities combined. 

This is principally due to a substantial volunteer presence in the New Zealand non-profit sector, which is a product, in important part, of the strong community traditions of New Zealand’s indigenous Maori population.
