Philanthropy, social justice and the Islamic tradition

Concepts of philanthropy and social justice have a strong basis in Islamic teachings. However, there are discrepancies between these core concepts and the way they are commonly practised. This discrepancy lies between traditional philanthropy, often in the form of direct giving in cash or kind to meet a recipient’s immediate needs, and modern philanthropy, with broader goals and managed by modern institutions. One of the ways in which modern philanthropy finds expression is by addressing issues of social justice.
