Addressing the closing plenary of the European Foundation Centre 18th Annual General Assembly and Conference in Madrid in early June, Barry Gaberman spoke of ‘a buzz in the hallways’. The conference, New Challenges for Global Philanthropy, had put the critical issues of our time on the agenda, he said. Also important was EFC members’ agreement to an increase in fees, thereby committing themselves to supporting the organization adequately in the future. Click here to read ...

How effectively are we measuring progress and how well are we communicating that to public opinion and policymakers? Is any of it making a difference? These were some of the key questions addressed by the OECD Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Policy, which took place in Istanbul 27-29 June and drew over 1,400 people from multinational organizations, government, business, academia and civil society. The 58th Annual Conference of the Council on Foundations, held in Seattle in late April/early May, brought together over 2,000 people to discuss the role of philanthropy in addressing four of the big challenges of our time: Combating Poverty, Ensuring Public Health, Protecting the Environment, and Preparing for and Responding to Disasters. In general the emphasis was more on making a difference at home than around the globe. Click here to read ...

As one would expect from an event organized by a relatively young and high-impact initiative to enhance foundation effectiveness, the Center for Effective Philanthropy's biennial conference in Chicago in early March was a case study in the inexorable, if tortured, disciplining of grantmaking foundations through empirical data. This year’s Global Philanthropy Forum in early April focused on financing social change and took place in the headquarters of Google. The location inspired keynote speaker Judith Rodin of the Rockefeller Foundation to describe the history of US philanthropy in dot.com terms, starting with Philanthropy 1.0.

This, she said, involved the ‘fathers’ of modern American philanthropy, Rockefeller, Mellon and Ford. Its focus was on literacy, health and the building of infrastructure, but it also looked outside the USA and thus had a global aspect. Click here to read ...

While the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland (24-28 January) has never been known as a meeting place for civil society, this year’s Forum could be the starting point for a change of direction. Admittedly, the programme did not reflect this opportunity as much as actual conversations taking place. Out of 100 sessions under the overall theme ‘The Shifting Power Equation’, just one was dedicated to philanthropy (there were two sessions on tasting fine wines). Click here to read ...

Something that was very apparent at this WINGS Forum, held in Bangkok 16-18 November, is how much the WINGS members have in common and what a lot they can learn from each other. While the plenary sessions introduced loftier themes relating to the role of grantmakers in today’s world – and to the conference title, ‘Making a Difference in Philanthropy’ – the breakout sessions were real working and learning sessions. The World Social Forum

The World Social Forum (WSF), held in Kenya 20-25 January, had its usual mix of peoples and causes, and Kenya added an unmistakable African flavour. There was also an overwhelming set of 1,000+ meetings to choose from, some headlined by world-renowned speakers, others letting women farmers speak for themselves. Certain themes stood out: land rights, food sovereignty, and opposition to GMOs (genetically modified organisms) – and, of course, the lampooning and lambasting of George Bush and his allies.
