Skoll-AVINA partnership to halt Amazon deforestation

The Skoll Foundation and AVINA announced a $6 million partnership in March to tackle Amazon deforestation in response to climate change. Tropical deforestation accounts for approximately 20 per cent of global carbon emissions, releasing an estimated 2 gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and reducing the planet’s sequestration capacity.

Mapping social innovation

People turning backyards into organic farms; architects transforming waste materials into new homes; government innovation funds supporting novel ways of managing chronic disease; communities buying wind farms or football clubs; citizens forming ‘complaints choirs’ to protest through song. These are just a few examples of social innovation. As a field, social innovation is lively and remarkably fertile but poorly understood in comparison to business and technological innovation. A new mapping project aims to change this.

Pooling data to make it easier to find social entrepreneurs

The Skoll Foundation, PopTech, ideablob and Civic Ventures have pooled their data to create the first open database of social entrepreneurs. The Social Entrepreneur API (Application Programming Interface) will allow philanthropists, investors, press and fellow entrepreneurs to find social entrepreneurs based on keyword, location, cause area, population served, and a variety of other factors.

Effect explores the concept of social justice

The 8th issue of the European Foundation Centre’s magazine Effect will be published in September, with a special feature focusing on the concept of social justice as a goal of philanthropy. What do we mean by ‘social justice’ and how can foundations contribute to achieving it? Effect will highlight a series of examples that show how different foundations are supporting the empowerment of groups who face various forms of disadvantage, thereby helping to counter the negative effects of inequality.
