Whispering from the rooftops

In September 2007, Alliance ran a special issue on climate change in which Stephen Heintz, President of Rockefeller Brothers Fund, described the work that RBF has been doing for some years in the USA. The Carnegie UK Trust recently asked me to find out what trusts are doing in the UK, especially in relation to the social justice consequences of climate change, and what more they might do in the future. My report, called Responding to the Rooftops (in the same speech in which Al Gore used his ‘Inconvenient Truth’ phrase, he also referred to scientists ‘virtually screaming from the rooftops now’), suggests a very mixed picture.

Vital Signs gives mixed report card for Canada

Child poverty in Canada is stuck at the same level as in 1989 and immigrant family incomes are falling behind, according to Canada’s Vital Signs 2008, the annual report card on quality of life produced by Community Foundations of Canada (CFC).

Data on philanthropy in the Arab region needed

In September, the John D Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the American University of Cairo and the Arab Foundations Forum (AFF) met to discuss issues related to quantitative data collection on philanthropy in the Arab region, including definitions and classifications and identifying the gaps in available data.

Italian foundations launch own asset management company

Three Italian foundations have set up their own asset management company tailor-made in order to ‘build an investment platform which fully understands foundations’. Ninety per cent of what we do is for foundations, explains Luca Vaiani, Chairperson of Fondaco Lux. This means aligning the new company with foundations in terms of transparency, governance and fee structure and understanding exactly what they need. ‘Foundations are both our shareholders and our subscribers,’ says Vaiani.

GlobalGiving.co.uk launches

Online direct donation platform GlobalGiving launched a UK operation, GlobalGiving.co.uk in September. As a result, overseas development charities based in the UK stand to benefit. VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas), and many small and medium-sized UK charities, already had projects live on the UK website at its launch.
