The US charitable non-profit sector is now the third largest employer among the 18 ‘industries’ recorded by official US statistics. Reflecting this, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has begun issuing a regular statistical series on non-profit employment for the first time, using a technique perfected by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies for identifying non-profit employers in the BLS quarterly census of all places of employment in the US.
