Pakistan gives first-ever corporate philanthropy awards

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz gave away Pakistan’s first-ever corporate philanthropy awards in January this year. Instituted by the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy, the Pakistan Corporate Philanthropy Awards (PCPA) are based on PCP’s documentation of business sector giving in a recent survey entitled Corporate Philanthropy in Pakistan: Survey of Public Listed Companies 2004-2005.

The awards have gone to the top three public listed companies for 2004 and 2005 based on two criteria: volume of donations and percentage of before-tax profit given as donations. Urging the corporate sector to build a giving tradition, the Prime Minster said companies should try to set a benchmark and donate at least 1 per cent of their before-tax profit for social causes.
