Shakira and Garcia Marquez launch Latin American foundation

In December 2006, singer Shakira joined with fellow Colombian and Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez to launch Latin America in Solidarity Action (ALAS), a foundation to fight child poverty in Latin America. Backed by other notables from the worlds of finance and entertainment, ALAS will be led as executive director by another singer, Miguel Bose. Shakira, who conceived the idea for the foundation, also heads the Colombian non-profit foundation Pies Descalzos, or Barefoot, which helps child victims of violence.

IDIS launches social investment portal

Brazil’s Institute for the Development of Social Investment (IDIS) has launched a social investment portal which aims both to be a national repository of social investment information and to promote thinking about the topic. It includes articles, models of social intervention (developed both by IDIS and by others), research and news about events and publications. Its official language is Portuguese, but many of the documents are also available in English and Spanish.
