The Social Entrepreneur’s Handbook: How to start, build and run a business that improves the world

Alison Bukhari
01 December 2011
Alliance magazine

Sitting here in Mumbai having spent a few days last week facilitating Dasra’s skills-building programme for social entrepreneurs, Dasra Social-Impact, it seems an apt time to be reviewing The Social Entrepreneur’s Handbook. Rupert Scofield’s book is a series of case stories with advice from a mentor-like narrator.

Do_MoreThan_Give

Do More Than Give

Steven Burkeman
01 December 2011
Alliance magazine

Do More Than Give is full of unquestionably – relentlessly, even – positive instances of creative behaviour by (for the most part) US foundations. To examine it critically is rather like criticizing motherhood, and possibly even apple pie.

Nonprofit-Outcomes-Toolbox

The Nonprofit Outcomes Toolbox - A complete guide to program effectiveness, performance measurement, and results

David Pritchard
01 September 2011
Alliance magazine

Any book that claims to be a ‘complete guide’ sets itself up for disappointment, and this problem applies to The Nonprofit Outcomes Toolbox. This is a shame because the book contains a lot of important ideas and information that many (including me) will find new and useful.

Leap of Reason

Leap of Reason - Managing to outcomes in an era of scarcity

Tris Lumley
01 September 2011
Alliance magazine

I’m an evangelist about charities measuring their results – a signed-up, card-carrying member of the impact brigade. But from time to time, I admit I have doubts about whether the increasing interest in measurement among charities and social enterprises is really translating into greater impact: more people’s lives being changed more significantly and deeply entrenched social issues getting solved.

Panic in the Chicken Coop / Philanthropy - Good ideas and new ideas

Carolina Wallenius
1 June 2011
Alliance magazine

These publications are produced by two different and very reputable philanthropy organizations, Forum for Active Philanthropy in Berlin, Germany and wise Philanthropy Advisors, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The publications I have reviewed are most interesting but how well are they likely to succeed in communicating with their target audience?

GiveSmart

Give Smart - Philanthropy that gets results

Michael Alberg-Seberich
1 June 2011
Alliance magazine

This is another American book on giving, and I think it is a very good one! Thomas Tierney, co-founder and chairman of the Bridgespan Group, and Joel L Fleishman, professor of law and public policy at Duke University, have written with Give Smart a very readable, motivating introductory guide to engaged giving. ‘Engaged’ encompasses here donors giving more than just their treasures.

Morethangoodintentions

More Than Good Intentions - How a new economics is helping to solve global poverty

Andrew Kingman
1 June 2011
Alliance magazine

The publisher’s gushing blurb, suggesting that Dean Karlan has developed ‘an entirely new approach’ to making aid effective, may embarrass the economist in years to come, but nonetheless this is an important book. First, through a series of case studies the book illustrates what most development practitioners know and many funders forget: one size does not fit all.
