Abraaj Capital sets up 22-year-long fund for Palestinian orphans

Dubai-based private equity group Abraaj Capital is donating US$10 million to a trust fund to help educate more than 1,200 Palestinian children and youth who lost parents during violence in Gaza in December and January. The fund, launched in May at a ceremony hosted by the King and Queen of Jordan, will be managed by the Palestinian-based Welfare Association. In 2008, there was no escaping the global recession in the Arab region, especially in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, better known as the Gulf states. The local economies are in a dire situation. The drop in oil prices, along with the severe downturn in local stock markets and the drop in demand for real estate, has sobered the excessive spending habits often associated with the Gulf.

Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory are the world’s largest per capita recipients of international aid, yet they have very limited influence over how that aid is used. Civil society’s dependence on international aid contributes to a host of problems, including donor-driven agendas, wasted human and financial resources, and fraudulent practices. Also, donor-dependent CSOs become accountable to their donors rather than to their local communities. Communities themselves often see very little of the aid money once the aid agency takes its administrative costs and the international NGO intermediary takes its cut. This leaves Palestinians without mechanisms for real participation, much less leadership, in their own social change and development. Click here to read ...
