Do More Than Give is full of unquestionably – relentlessly, even – positive instances of creative behaviour by (for the most part) US foundations. To examine it critically is rather like criticizing motherhood, and possibly even apple pie.

01 December 2011
Alliance magazine

The opening plenary of the UK’s Association of Charitable Foundations’ 2011 conference on 18 October was called ‘view from the bridge’. Alliance magazine

A study conducted in early 2010[1] identified 17 US-based foundations funding in the Arab region. These foundations are funding at varying degrees, in specific countries, and on different issues. Although they do not share a common framework for their work, they have funded primarily in three areas: research and fellowships; support for identity-based NGOs (for instance, marginalized or under-supported constituents) and support for civil society development. What are the opportunities and challenges for these and other US-based foundations following the Arab Spring? Click here to read ...

But EU efforts to harmonize immigration policies have led to a situation that is more complex for policymakers, stakeholders and those affected by key decisions. 01 December 2011
Alliance magazine

Public trust in European foundations is generally sound, but the sector must still make efforts to raise the bar on its standards of transparency. This was the key message from some 35 European foundation leaders recently convened by the EFC and the Wellcome Trust in London.

There are currently 12,921 charitable foundations registered in Spain, of which 70 per cent are active. The annual average number of new foundations in Spain has grown since the early 1990s, the sector being mostly composed of ‘young’ organizations. These are among the findings of a report compiled by the Institute for Strategic Analysis of Foundations (INAEF), the first to provide basic data on the socioeconomic importance of the Spanish foundation sector.[1]

UK foundations making significant contribution to international development

01 December 2011
Alliance magazine

According to a new study, UK foundations gave an estimated £290 million to international development and related causes in 2009/10. The bulk of it went to CSOs in the UK and developing countries, roughly half the amount of bilateral aid given by the Department for International Development (DfID) to such organizations. Spending on international development causes accounted for 9 per cent of the grantmaking of all UK independent foundations (just over £3 billion per annum in total) in the designated period.
