Banks and philanthropy advice: what’s happening in emerging markets?

As we have seen throughout this special feature, major financial institutions and wealth advisers in Western Europe and the US are increasingly beginning to offer their clients philanthropy advice services, though all our contributors seem to agree that overall the amount on offer is very small compared to the actual amount of philanthropy. What is happening in emerging market countries, Alliance asked a number of people either active in philanthropy or from the banks themselves.

A steering group for the philanthropy advice field

A steering group of individuals and organizations involved in providing philanthropy advice was created in late 2009 with the aim of stimulating the provision of and take-up of good philanthropy advice in the UK. New Philanthropy Capital’s research, The Business of Philanthropy, concluded that, despite the past decade’s rise in giving, both the demand for and supply of philanthropy advice remain modest at best: few donors actually receive professional advice about their giving, and few professional advisers are integrating philanthropy into their businesses.

‘The adviser should play the role of an educator or a coach in supporting the decision-making of the donor,’ says Marcos Kisil of IDIS (Brazil). As more and more donors, especially substantial ones, want to be more closely involved in their giving, there has been increasing demand for the services of professional advisers to provide the ‘coaching’ that Kisil is talking about. But advisers don’t have godlike impartiality. In addition to knowledge of the sector, they bring their own values and preconceptions.

On 16 June, Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett (pictured) publicly invited US billionaires to pledge the majority of their wealth to charity. The Giving Pledge is a matter of a moral commitment to give; it will not involve pooling money or supporting a particular set of causes or organizations. The hope is that the movement will expand to other parts of the world. Analysts have already estimated that if the people on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans all made the pledge, an additional US$600 billion could flow to the non-profit sector.
