Egyptians were electrified by the 18-day uprising, in which many donor-funded NGOs played crucial roles in overthrowing the Mubarak regime. For the first time in years, Egyptians speak with confidence about their ability to surmount the country’s social, developmental and governmental challenges. Early optimism has, however, been replaced by a growing recognition that constructing democracy and social justice will take years.

We are in the midst of an uprising of nearly half of the peoples of the Arab states protesting about failed economic and social policies and political repression that have been going on for decades. Rather than aiming at comprehensive and sustainable economic and social development to benefit people, state policies were aimed at global markets and macroeconomic growth. National resources were squandered by corruption and outright theft by a privileged few.

Governments in the Arab region have responded to pressure for reform and popular participation either by repression or by concession. Even in ‘successful’ uprisings such as those of Egypt and Tunisia, the ultimate outcomes of regime change are far from certain. Nonetheless, one feature of the region-wide uprisings gives ground for optimism: the flowering of peaceful citizen initiative, which had been suppressed throughout decades of dictatorship.

If the principal goals of philanthropy are to help resolve societal problems, serve the ‘public good’ and bring about sustainable systemic change, then advocacy is an essential element in achieving these goals. Indeed, Gara La Marche, former president of Atlantic Philanthropies, believes that ‘funding advocacy and advocates is the most direct route to supporting enduring social change for the poor, the disenfranchised and the most vulnerable among us, including the youngest and oldest in our communities.’[1]

APPC - Give2Asia merges with APPC and forms APAN

Give2Asia has acquired the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC) and launched a new network, the Asian Philanthropy Advisory Network (APAN). The merged organization, which will retain the name Give2Asia, brings together the grantmaking and philanthropy advice for which Give2Asia is known with the research and advocacy of APPC. The merger also fulfils Give2Asia’s strategy of expanding its presence in Asia and providing bespoke services to donors both there and in the US.

Long-term campaign to tackle disability in Vietnam bears fruit at CGI

One of the pledges made at September’s Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) meeting brings together a number of public, private and philanthropic organizations to address the challenges facing the large numbers of people with physical and mental disabilities in Vietnam. Those involved, who include USAID, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Aspen Institute, IBM and Hyatt Hotels, have between them pledged $3.5 million to coordinate efforts.
