Jacana makes first investment in East Africa VC fund manager

Jacana Venture Partnership announced at the end of June its first investment in an African venture capital (VC) fund manager, InReturn Capital, an East African SME investment firm based in Kenya. SMEs are generally acknowledged as crucial motors for economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa, but access to finance is a major obstacle to their growth.

Femina HIP, the citizen media initiative, started as a small project in Tanzania in 1999. By 2010, Femina had become the country’s biggest ‘citizen’ media platform, and a significant shaper of contemporary culture and values, reaching 10 million (out of 40 million) people in Tanzania, with over 800 distribution partnerships reaching across the country.

But fortunately, following a brutal 14-year civil conflict that killed an estimated 270,000 people and ruined the lives of countless others, Liberians saw and grabbed their chance for a fresh start in 2005 when we elected Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as the first-ever female African head of state.

Social Investment Exchange to launch in Kenya

There is a clear need for an institutional structure to lead, coordinate and expand the development of Kenya’s social investment sector. With this in mind, Allavida, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, has embarked on the establishment of the Kenya Social Investment Exchange (KSIX), the first social investment exchange in East Africa, to be launched later this year. KSIX aims to promote the growth of social investment in three important ways.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s flagship event in support of better governance in Africa is the awarding of the annual Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, worth $5 million. But this year there was no winner. According to the press release, ‘the Prize Committee has considered some credible candidates. However, after in-depth review, the Prize Committee could not select a winner.’ Mo Ibrahim himself pointed out that it was ‘the Prize Committee's decision not to award a prize this year and we entirely respect it.

Exposure to advertising is pervasive in most countries, with companies and other advertisers paying significant sums in the hope of influencing consumer decisions. In fact, there is little research that quantifies the effect of the 'creative content' of ads. Nor do we know much about how important ad content is relative to the product’s price.

The current economic climate creates a series of challenges for the development community. While Western economies are increasingly required to justify development spending, developing economies, particularly in Africa, are suffering as a result of lower commodity prices, decreasing in-flows of investment, lower demand for African exports and falling government revenues. This is exacerbated by the disproportionate effects of climate change on the continent –Africa is suffering the consequences of other nations’ emissions.
