The uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East have taken the world by storm, if not by surprise. Palestine and Lebanon have always lived out their volatility in the open, but the long-term governments of some of the other countries that have since broken into open rebellion have always seemed to have the lid fairly tightly sealed. One wonders how this would have played out in the continuous South African uprisings of the 1980s. There are similarities and significant differences between the South African and North African experiences.

Philanthropy Secretariat bringing funders to Liberia

As reported in the March 2010 issue of Alliance, Liberia is the first country in the world to create a government office dedicated to facilitating the work of foundations and philanthropists. Founded in April 2009, the Liberia Philanthropy Secretariat helps foundations find key information that is difficult to access in Liberia and encourages information sharing among foundations supporting work in the country. How has the initiative fared? One question was always whether foundations would voluntarily interact with this government office.

African Grantmakers Network - AGN moves on

At a meeting of the AGN Steering Committee held in Zanzibar last month, a board of trustees was formally elected, the first executive director, Dr Sulemana Abudulai, appointed, and a three-year Strategic Plan adopted. The meeting was attended by the founding members and other stakeholders, and saw a lot of discussion and debate on charting the path of growth for the organization as it looks forward to its second assembly, to be held in southern Africa in 2012.

Forum to strengthen community grantmaking in southern Africa

November 2010 saw the launch of a new initiative to stimulate community grantmaking in southern Africa. The Southern African Community Grantmakers Leadership Forum (SACGLF) grew out of the Southern African Community Grantmakers Leadership Cooperative, a five-year initiative of the Synergos Institute to bring together leaders of community grantmaking organizations to strengthen social justice philanthropy in southern Africa.

In my article in February 2011, I described the wave of protests triggered by events in Tunisia that was sweeping across the Arab region as a ‘Tunisami’. Then only Tunisian ruler Zein Ben Ali had bowed to the clamour for new freedoms and new opportunities. Now, almost two months later, Egypt has succumbed, and in other Arab countries rulers are either accepting reform or confronting demonstrators with brutal force – though it is buying time, no more. Following a decade of economic collapse and political stalemate, the formation of the unity government in Zimbabwe in February 2009 offered an opportunity to rebuild a civil society sector decimated by years of political and economic crises and to set the country on the path to a successful democratic transformation. Time was crucial in seizing the opportunity. A collaborative effort seemed to offer the best framework for a timely response, especially for funders new to Zimbabwe – hence the decision to create the Zimbabwe Alliance.

Enterprise Zimbabwe to power country’s small enterprise sector

At the Clinton Global Initiative last September, Humanity United, the Nduna Foundation and Virgin Unite jointly launched Enterprise Zimbabwe. The new organization will catalyse investments from philanthropic and commercial donors to fund small and medium-size businesses (SMEs) and social development initiatives. A glance at the statistics illustrates the need they aim to meet. The economic crisis in Zimbabwe has destroyed huge numbers of jobs and livelihoods. Unemployment runs at 95 per cent and 81 per cent of the working-age population struggles to get by in the informal economy.

African Grantmakers Network - Governing the public sphere in Africa

TrustAfrica and the Southern Africa Trust, leading members of the African Grantmakers Network, have just published a collection of country profiles assessing the climate for participatory governance and the relationships between the state and civil society in 18 African countries. (Dis) Enabling the Public Sphere: Civil society regulation in Africa, edited by Bhekinkosi Moyo, was published in November and launched in Dakar on 28 January.

Second investment for Jacana

Jacana Venture Partnership agreed its second partnership with an African private equity fund in December last year. Jacana’s investment in Fidelity Capital Partners Ltd, a Ghana-based fund with a total of $32 million under management, will enable Fidelity to expand its senior team ahead of the planned launch of its third fund in 2012.
