CIVICUS - People’s participation to be at heart of 2008 World Assembly

The CIVICUS World Assembly will be held from 18 to 21 June at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. Although the overarching theme will be, as in the past three years, Acting Together for a Just World, the particular focus next year will be People, Participation and Power. This theme, which emerged from the two previous World Assemblies as a key concern for CIVICUS members, civil society and other stakeholders, will highlight the role of individuals in effecting change in their communities at the local, national and international levels. We believe it will become the new guiding principle for public actors for this decade.

APPC - Updated reports on philanthropy and law in South Asia

Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC) has just published an updated analysis of recent developments in South Asia relating to the regulation of, and policy towards, the philanthropy and non-profit sector. Compiled by the same authors who wrote the original, 2004 version of Philanthropy and Law in South Asia (PALISA), the reports describe and analyse new developments (2004 to mid-2007) in legal frameworks in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, showing what Barnett Baron of The Asia Foundation calls ‘growing government awareness of and wary cooperation with the non-profit sector’.

WINGS - WINGS puts its 2007-10 strategy into operation

WINGS is beginning to put its new three-year strategy into operation. By the time this edition of Alliance appears, it will have held the first in a new series of peer learning events for the senior staff of grantmaker support organizations and associations. Sixteen participants from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America will come together for Communication Strategies for Grantmaker Associations, in Boston, USA.

Council on Foundations - Community foundations becoming ‘mainstream’ at World Bank

Launched in 2002 following a series of conversations between the International Committee of the Council on Foundations and senior officials of the World Bank, the World Bank Community Foundation Initiative (CFI) is to conclude next year. With funding from the Ford Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the World Bank, the CFI’s aim has been to educate Bank staff about the community foundation concept and to engage the Bank in a learning process through support of a limited number of pilot community foundations in developing countries.

EFC - Foundations to ‘get creative’ at EFC’s 2008 conference

The future of Europe rests on its ability to break new ground and encourage creative ventures in all walks of life. Its capacity to innovate and implement the necessary changes depends on the readiness of people to open up to fresh thinking, listen to independent voices, and develop a climate of mutual learning.

What foundations have done in the past, and what they can contribute in the future, in regard to this process will be examined at the European Foundation Centre’s 19th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Conference, ‘Fostering Creativity’, to be held on 29-30 May 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey.
