CIVICUS - CIVICUS launches Crisis Response Fund

Contrary to the optimistic post Cold War projections of many, civil society now finds itself more constrained than ever. The so-called war on terror has been used to justify old-fashioned repression not only by undemocratic regimes but, even more disturbingly, by self-proclaimed champions of democracy.

Since 2007, CIVICUS has identified more than 85 countries where governments have carried out systemic actions aimed at curbing the space and activities of civil society. These include legislation that prohibits the registration of CSOs or restricts funding to civil society; identifying and targeting human rights advocates and activists; imposing restrictions on travel; and closing down CSOs.

WINGS - Using Emergent Learning to increase peer learning

For its 2008 Peer Learning Event, which will take place in Brussels 10-12 September, WINGS is introducing a methodology known as Emergent Learning. Developed by Signet Research & Consulting, ‘Emergent Learning helps a network or team improve the quality of its thinking about the key challenges it faces, and build a strong link between what it is thinking and what it is doing in practice.’

Council on Foundations - Different responses to disaster in Myanmar and China

The Myanmar cyclone and the China earthquake in early May both triggered a strong humanitarian response from members of the Council on Foundations, but the level of response in each case differed significantly, the Council has found.

Grantmakers without Borders - The cost of the war on terror to the US non-profit sector

Grantmakers Without Borders and OMB Watch recently released a white paper that comprehensively documents the impact that the ‘war on terror’ is having on US charities and foundations. Collateral Damage: How the war on terror hurts charities, foundations, and the people they serve makes clear that shortsighted, undemocratic policies are constraining the critical activities of the charitable and philanthropic sectors, stifling free speech, and ultimately impeding the fight against terrorism.

EFC - EFC continues to be active in convening role

There was record attendance at EFC's 19th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Conference, which gathered over 630 participants in Istanbul. Delegates were challenged to consider what role foundations can play in encouraging social, cultural, scientific and technological change by working creatively. With keynote addresses from Mary Robinson, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Avila Kilmurray of the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, as well as 31 sessions and 21 pre-conference events, participants had ample opportunity to share innovative ways to tackle common issues and learn from their peers.
