CIVICUS - CIVICUS mission highlights threat to civil society in Zimbabwe

Over Christmas 2008, on receiving reports from civil society colleagues about severe repression of activists amidst a total governance breakdown, CIVICUS undertook a week-long fact-finding cum solidarity mission to Zimbabwe. The mission was able to authenticate reports of severe repression of human rights defenders, who are being prevented from carrying out their work through a targeted campaign of torture, abduction and other forms of intimidation.

WINGS - WINGS 2009 peer learning events

Based on the priorities of network participants, expressed in a recent survey, WINGS peer learning activities for 2009 will focus on engaging corporations and on sustainability at this time of global economic crisis. The insights and experiences of participants will serve as inputs to develop a toolkit and/or reference materials on these topics.

COUNCIL ON FOUNDATIONS - Responding to hard economic times

The Council on Foundations estimates that foundation assets dropped by 30-45 per cent in 2008, resulting in a loss of $280 billion of philanthropic resources. The response of Council members to the recession has varied. Some private foundations are increasing their payout in 2009 beyond the required minimum 5 per cent of philanthropic assets, even though those assets have declined. Others are reducing grants across the board or limiting 2009 funding mainly to current grantees.

EUROPEAN FOUNDATION CENTRE - EFC raises priorities with Commission President

In January, members of the EFC Management Committee met José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and raised with him two issues that are of particular importance to foundations: the need for a European Foundation Statute, and the problem of rules relating to Value Added Tax (VAT).
