COF members aim to meet needs despite asset declines

Nearly three-quarters of Council on Foundations (COF) members surveyed in March this year experienced asset declines of 25 per cent or more in 2008 and two-thirds reported a further 10 per cent drop in early 2009. A total of 430 foundations responded, including community foundations and family, independent and corporate grantmakers in 45 states. Family and independent foundations saw the largest declines. As a result, 62 per cent of foundations responding to the survey are reducing their grantmaking in 2009, but 38 per cent plan to maintain or increase it.

WINGS to settle in permanent home

The Worldwide Initiative for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) has decided to incorporate and move its Secretariat office to a more permanent location in 2011. The decision to establish the WINGS Secretariat at a permanent address was carefully considered by the Coordinating Committee, the paramount consideration being that neither WINGS’ global character nor its principle of inclusiveness be compromised.

EFC conference highlights fight against poverty

‘Fighting Poverty – Creating Opportunities’ was the main theme of the EFC’s 20th annual conference, which took place in Rome from 14 to 16 May. The event attracted around 700 delegates from more than 60 countries.

Network of European Foundations - Establishing a fund for European journalism

The European Fund for Investigative Journalism (Journalismfund.eu for short) has been awarded seed funding from the Fritt Ord Foundation via the Network of European Foundations, with more funders being sought to help fund the start-up phase. The support is being used to set up research stipendia for journalists and a pilot round of applications for has showed immense interest from a number of journalists, several of them of high standing.

First joint APPC and WINGS event in Asia

From 27 to 29 April, the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium hosted WINGS’ first regional Peer Learning Event of 2009. Held in Hong Kong, the two and a half day event was attended by 12 WINGS network participants from Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand.
