APPC - Supporting database development for greater diaspora giving

Giving by the diaspora has reached significant levels in a number of countries, yet it is often hampered by lack of information. At the APPC conference on diaspora philanthropy, held in Hanoi last May, the need was identified for more reliable sources of information for both diaspora organizations and individual givers so that they can locate and give to their preferred causes more efficiently and effectively.

CIVICUS - Responding quickly to threats to civil society

With freedom of expression, association and assembly increasingly under attack, there is a greater need for intervention in the early stages of the drafting process of laws or the introduction of moves restrictive of civil society activity. Early intervention greatly increases the chances of success in influencing and cooperating with a government or other stakeholder in the revision of a particular action.

NEF - Dieter Berg is NEF’s new chair

The NEF General Assembly in Rome in May welcomed Dieter Berg of the Robert Bosch Stiftung as NEF’s new chair, taking over from Luc Tayart de Borms of the King Baudouin Foundation for the next three years. Dieter Berg is chairman of the board of management at the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

Luc Tayart will act as NEF treasurer, with Piero Gastaldo of Compania di San Paolo as vice-chair and Francis Charhon of Fondation de France as secretary. Boris Marte of Erste Stiftung and Goran Blomqvist of Riksbankens Jubileumsfond are also on the board.

GwoB - Workshop looks at gender and global grantmaking

‘Gender’ is not shorthand for ‘women and girls’ but must also encompass men, boys, transgender people and other gender expressions. It is a social construct designed to describe culturally defined differences, not biological differences. These were some of the key perspectives of a two-day workshop for grantmakers on issues of gender in global grantmaking, convened in June by Grantmakers without Borders (Gw/oB).
