This was the theme of a discussion hosted by Alliance at the 2004 Council on Foundations annual conference. Presentations from Dennis Whittle of GlobalGiving, Venkat Krishnan of GIVE Foundation India and Barry Gaberman from the Ford Foundation highlighted both the potential and the shortcomings of this relatively new means of philanthropy. It is clearly capable of transforming the relationship between giver and recipient and of smoothing out some of the complexities of giving to an unknown cause in a remote place, but can it significantly increase the flow of philanthropy from richer to poorer countries?
