The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund announced its grantees for their second round of funding, following the end of the inaugural round in 2018. Eight grantees were selected from Jordan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates to support thousands of young refugees in the continuation of schooling.

The second round aims to give grants worth AED25 million (approximately £5.5 million) to support refugee students in Jordan and Lebanon, and children affected by disasters and conflicts, residing in the UAE. The grants are meant to impact the 2019-2020 academic year.

Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair said, ‘We believe that education is just as important for refugee youth as food and shelter. It is not just a basic right and necessity, but also a tool for recovery. Going back to school partially restores normalcy for the young people and enables them to obtain knowledge and skills that will help them chart a successful career path and earn a sustainable income.’

The fund aims to support 10,000 students (more than in 2018) through secondary level and vocational education. First two of funding dispersed AED74 million (approximately £16 million) supporting the education of over 17,000 youth in Jordan, Lebanon, and UAE.

He added,‘Along with our partners, we seek to identify new approaches to long-standing challenges in refugee education that will lead to improved educational outcomes.’
