MacKenzie Scott, philanthropist and ex-wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos, has married Dan Jewett, a high school science teacher who has pledged to work with her in giving away much of her billions.

The news of Scott and Jewett’s marriage became public through a letter he wrote for the Giving Pledge, published Saturday.

‘I join with the kindest and most thoughtful person I know in making this pledge, grateful for the exceptional privilege it will be to partner in giving away assets with the potential to do so much good when shared,’ wrote Jewett in his letter.

The medium through which Scott and Jewett made the news of their marriage public takes on extra significance when reviewing Scott’s recent work as a philanthropist. In December, she revealed in a Medium post that she had donated more than $6 billion last year – a pace that eclipses almost everyone in the philanthropy world.

Scott’s influence was evident in a report released jointly last week by Candid and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, which found that the sums she gave away last year accounted for nearly three-quarters of Covid-19 related giving by billionaires and high-net worth individuals.

‘She’s made a huge impact,’ said Grace Sato, Director of Research at Candid. ‘The way that she gave swung the trends in what we were seeing.’

Scott publicly joined the Giving Pledge in May 2019, a month after her divorce with Bezos was finalised. Bezos – who jostles with Tesla CEO Elon Musk for the title of world’s richest person, depending on share prices of their respective companies – has not signed the Giving Pledge.
