National Center for Family Philanthropy have released Trends 2020, the second national benchmark survey of family foundations. Building on findings from Trends 2015, Trends 2020 explores the grantmaking, governance, and operations practices of family foundations.

The study revealed a shift in grantmaking strategies, an increasing use of impact investing, and a strong focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Overall the amount being given has increased, however foundations are making fewer grants (indicating larger grants). The number of family foundations engaged in mission/impact investing has also doubled since 2015.

The report also revealed a shift in behaviour of newer foundations with grantmaking becoming more issue-based. Eighty one per cent of foundations established prior to 1970 are geographically focused. In contrast, 82 per cent of foundations founded since 2010 are issue-focused.
