A new website provides an electronic map showing the social enterprises active in helping to provide electricity or alternative fuel to off-grid communities around the world. Energy Map, which is the result of a collaboration between the Center for Science, Technology and Society (CSTS) at Santa Clara University and social enterprise information company Ayllu, provides detailed graphs and analyses of 40 social enterprises in 16 countries which are helping to bring electricity or alternative fuel to between 500 and 500,000 people each. The map shows the types of distribution systems, business models, technologies and product designs they are using, as well as detailed financial and business model profiles of the enterprises involved. As such, it has obvious merits for both the supply (investors and funders looking for promising vehicles) and demand (social enterprises looking for investment and information) sides of energy provision in developing countries.
