A brand-new centre dedicated to training Black nonprofit leaders has opened.

The ‘Center for Leadership Equity’ in the US city of Philadelphia was launched in July, as part of a new initiative close the racial equity gap. Black nonprofit leaders will have access to a host of resources, including educational training.

Nonprofit organisation United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), in partnership with six regional funders that includes the Hamilton Family Foundation, the William Penn Foundation and media firm Comcast, is behind the new centre.

‘By focusing on Black-led organisations, the most impacted by the racial equity gap within the nonprofit sector, we can better ensure that they have the resources they need to be effective and impactful in the communities they serve,’ says Kelly Woodland, Managing Director of Leadership Equity at UWGPSNJ, and co-founder of the Black Nonprofit Chief Executives of Philadelphia.

There are long standing barriers and challenges.

A study by Woodland and the Philadelphia African American Leadership Forum in 2016 finds that Black-led nonprofit organisations are smaller in size and revenue, depend on government funding, lack the social capital and connections of their white counterparts and traditionally serve the most vulnerable and marginalised populations with the least number of resources.

The centre will also be home to coaching, mentorship and events opportunities.
