STARS Foundation announced the winners of its 2010 Impact Awards on 2 December. The winners are NGOs from Kenya, Somaliland, South Africa, India and Bangladesh that work with disadvantaged children and are deemed to have provided outstanding services and demonstrated effective management practices.

The significance of the Impact Awards is that they recognize the importance of investing in the organization rather than funding a programme or project. They provide US$100,000 of unrestricted funding with tailored consultancy support, which equips the winning organizations to respond to local challenges and plan for the future. As STARS CEO Muna Wehbe remarked: ‘As well as enabling organizations to reach more children directly, the flexibility of our support allows for vital breathing space. As a result, thousands of children’s lives have been transformed.’

Although there are nominally six awards in total, three for Africa-Middle East and three for Asia-Pacific, a Rising Star Award has been added this year, worth US$10,000 in unrestricted funding with tailored consultancy support. This was won by Cape Town organization Home from Home Trust, which provides support and care for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children across Cape Town and its surrounding townships.
