Bellagio Initiative puts human well-being first

The Bellagio Initiative is a series of global consultations to deliver a new framework for philanthropy and international development in pursuit of human well-being in the 21st century. Led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and Resource Alliance, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, throughout this year the Initiative will be canvassing the views of a diverse group of practitioners, opinion leaders, social entrepreneurs and donors in order to come up with innovative solutions for philanthropic and development action.

The Initiative will feature consultation meetings with key constituencies around the world in September, commissioned think pieces on the challenges, solutions and innovations, and a mapping of the philanthropy sector and actors involved in international development in different parts of the world.

The various activities will culminate in a summit at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center from 9 to 22 November 2011. The summit will be organized around three broad thematic areas: trends and opportunities in development and philanthropy in the 21st century; mobilizing new resources for promoting well-being; and new frameworks for philanthropic innovation and action in a changing world, covering topics such as best practices, legal frameworks, accountability and strategic giving.
