Inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has announced plans to launch a World Wide Web Foundation to advance a free and open web, expand its capability and robustness, and extend its benefits to underserved communities. The foundation, to be launched next year, will receive a five-year, $5 million seed grant from the John S and James L Knight Foundation. It will harness research, technology development, and the latest web content to help develop services for needy communities in the areas of healthcare, nutrition, education and emergency relief.
