The MacArthur Foundation is best known for its Fellows Program, which celebrates individual creativity. Each year, 25 people in diverse fields receive a phone call out of the blue granting them the freedom to do their own work with a $500,000 no-strings-attached grant. In late August, MacArthur announced the first nine recipients of the new MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
