Brazilian government creates fund to save the Amazon

With President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s signature, the government of Brazil has created a fund to attract donations from around the world to combat deforestation of the Amazon region. Through the Fondo Amazonia (Amazon Fund), the government hopes to bring in USD 1,000 million to combat deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and to help conserve other Brazilian ecosystems. Resource volume could reach USD 21,000 million by 2021.
