The Council on Foundations has started a new website, the Economic Xchange, to share ideas about how to support cash-strapped charities and help cities feeling the economic pinch, and how to survive hard times for foundations themselves. Ideas offered so far include rejecting grant proposals for capital campaigns, providing more operating support to charities, and cancelling special events. For example, the Philadelphia Foundation says it cancelled a November celebration of its 90th anniversary at the Please Touch Museum. In addition, it published its most recent annual report only online. The two moves generated more than $100,000 for non-profit groups in the region, it says.
