Already suffering the effects, actual or anticipated, of the financial crisis, a number of US foundations have been hit – some beyond recovery – by the loss of investments in the collapse of Bernard L Madoff Investment Securities. US federal regulators arrested Madoff in early December on charges that he had masterminded a scheme defrauding investors of $50 billion by his own estimate.
