New findings from the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies

The countries of Southern Europe, despite long traditions of authoritarian rule and clientism, have recently made significant progress towards creating strong civil society sectors. New data on Portugal, coupled with prior data on Italy and Spain, reveal civil society sectors that, while not as large as those in neighbouring countries of Western Europe, are nevertheless much larger than those in the transitional countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
