Pro bono: a good practice on the rise

The pro bono movement is expanding in Latin America. In May 2009, the Pro Bono Project in Colombia was launched, following similar initiatives in Chile and Argentina. These initiatives represent the commitment to society and social responsibility of legal professionals by promoting access to the legal system and by rendering free legal assistance to civil society organizations and to people who are poor, marginalized and face discrimination.

In Chile, Colombia and elsewhere in Latin America, pro bono organizations and foundations consist of large legal offices that are committed to offering a certain number of monthly hours of free counselling and legal services.
