UK research centre on charitable giving to open in 2007

The Carnegie UK Trust, in partnership with the UK Government, the Scottish Executive and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), is to establish the UK’s first centre of excellence for research into charitable giving and philanthropy. The aim of the £2 million centre will be to support high-quality research into a better understanding of charitable giving and philanthropy, and to inform policy and practice decisions in the UK.

It will work closely with academics, policymakers, donors and fundraisers and will also provide training and an extensive publications and seminar programme. Over the next few months, Carnegie will be coordinating a series of consultation meetings across the UK with third sector organizations and the philanthropy and research communities to discuss the work of the proposed centre. Invitations to tender for the contract to host the centre will be published in early 2007, the opening of which is planned for next summer.

Second phase of ILDE under design

The Initiative for Learning Democracy in Europe (ILDE), launched by NEF in 2005, is to enter its second phase in 2007-08. This will involve two things: first, the production of an interactive multimedia resource pack on the theme of European citizenship, targeted primarily at young people, and particularly for use in secondary and vocational education. The pack will cover the legal rights and responsibilities flowing from EU citizenship, European governance and the role of EU institutions, and the broader questions of multiple identities and sense of belonging, and the role of Europe at the global level. Secondly, a European handbook will be produced to provide guidelines on the development of the school as a democratic space. This will be designed for pre-primary level children to the end of the secondary level.
