A message to Foundations: take your front door to Indigenous peoples

Whakarongo! Kia ora koutou katoa

Alliance’s special focus on Indigenous philanthropy worldwide kicks off in Aotearoa New Zealand with a conversation led by Dr Chelsea Grootveld of the J R McKenzie Trust and the Tindall Foundation’s John McCarthy.

In this peer dialogue, McCarthy discusses the Tindall Foundation’s work with Maori communities, how non-Indigenous funders can support Indigenous models of giving, and why decolonising systems and behaviour should be at the heart of philanthropy. This dialogue was recorded on 31 January 2020 in Aaotearoa New Zealand in partnership with the J R McKenzie Trust and was first broadcast on Alliance extra on 11 February 2020.

Thank you so much for the very insightful discussion. Would be interesting to have an interactive discussion on "Indigenous philanthropy" with and among diverse cultural groups as a learning session from the perspective of young people. Listening to the discussion brings me back home to the richness of our own culture and the brokenness of the mirror that we are reflecting ourselves because of hundred years of colonisation. All the best. in solidarity, Jo
