Attending to our foundations
Judged by the sheer number of new organizations formed over the last decade, global civil society looks exceedingly healthy. Latin America now boasts over 1 million NGOs – about the same as the United States. Russian NGOs number over 300,000 – ten times the number that existed before Perestroika. Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa and the most populous country on the continent, has experienced its own explosion of growth in NGOs along with heightened interest of international donors.
