The Inter-American Investment Bank (IADB) will be opening a USD2 billion line of credit to finance the Oportunidades (Opportunities) programme, a pioneer initiative for conditional monetary transfers supported by the government of Mexico. The programme obliges parents to keep their children in schools and covered by health services if they are to take advantage of benefits. The first USD200 million outlay will aim to improve access to education, health and nutrition for the poorest sectors benefited by the programme.
