US-based participatory grantmakers Mosaic have announced $6.4 million in grants to build key infrastructure the environment movements need to achieve clean air and water, a safe climate, healthy and just communities, and thriving natural systems. The new funding announcements brings Mosaic’s total investment to $10.9 million over the last 18 months.

The new resources will strengthen the capacity of activists and networks across the country with new tools, leadership training, connections, and coalition infrastructure. Funds will support 47 projects and directly benefit over 2,500 across the United States.

‘We cannot underplay the challenges nor overlook the opportunities of this critical environmental decade,’ said Katie Robinson, Mosaic’s Director. The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report sounded a ‘code red for humanity’.

If one part of the environmental movement is underfunded, the entire movement suffers.

‘For people and the planet, the stakes are high, and the environmental movement’s opponents’ are well-resourced and determined. Mosaic’s movement focus, and our new grants, can supercharge the collective capacity of activists and organisations who are doing big things–and want and need the tools to do even more together.’

Since its inception in 2020, Mosaic has received over 1,700 funding requests, demonstrating the need for funding to support and build movement infrastructure. Mosaic’s support of grantees is significant. The average grant this year is $135,000, and Mosaic will be the largest funder in 47 percent of the projects. Of the projects funded, 85 percent are BIPOC-led and 87 percent are women-led.
