A Europe-wide photography contest to capture the visual stories of the people behind philanthropy and how they work for a better Europe has just been launched by DAFNE. FOCUS: Philanthropy is open for submissions of photos capturing the theme #HoldingTogether: ‘Because we need stories of solidarity & stories for solidarity more than ever’. As a partner, Alliance magazine will be contributing to the jury and profiling the winning submission.

The outbreak of coronavirus has required foundations across Europe to step beyond their comfort zones and rapidly respond to new and intensified challenges by showing solidarity and support. Today’s crisis has demonstrated how fragile our societies are and how much we are in need of solidarity, yet the many inspiring stories that demonstrate this solidarity rarely feature in mainstream reporting.

The aim of FOCUS: Philanthropy is to capture these moments of support and solidarity by inviting European foundations and national associations – as well as NGOs and individuals supported by foundations – to submit inspiring photo stories of how they and their beneficiaries hold together and encourage collaboration in their everyday work through these difficult times.

What is FOCUS: Philanthropy?
FOCUS: Philanthropy is a photo contest initiated by the Russian Donors Forum in 2012 aimed at disseminating knowledge about philanthropy and building trust towards donors and foundations. Building on its positive experience, DAFNE decided to expand the contest to the European level by inviting national associations and foundations to participate in the photo project.

The best photo stories will be selected by a professional jury and announced on 1 October, the European Day of Donors and Foundations.

Can I apply?
Foundations and national associations or NGOs and people who were supported by a foundation can send a submission into the contest. The source of the photo might be a national association, a foundation or a person/group of persons/institution supported by a foundation. The photo and its accompanying story should be related to philanthropy and its contribution to public good.

Submission guidelines

  2. Write a compelling story of 130 words
  3. Submit the application by 31 May 2020, either to your national association listed below or (if your country is not represented) by using this form
