The International Network for the Reduction of Abortion Discrimination and Stigma (inroads) has launched a Funder Call to Action, asking funder organisations to break the silence and stigma that shrouds abortion by taking a stance on supporting abortion as a right, life experience healthcare practice, and cause.

Since launching, Amplify Change, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, Abortion Conversation Projects, Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres, Frida Fund, Fondo Semillas, Purposeful, and Safe Abortion Action Fund, all well-known funders within the feminist and reproductive justice movements, have joined inroads in taking this pledge to live, work, and speak about this commitment.

Signatories are actively inviting other foundations that have been privately supporting vital abortion movements for many years and others that are recently looking to join the fight to protect this fundamental human right, to join them in taking a public stance to destigmatize abortion within the philanthropic community.

In this pledge, we are asking people to recognize the cultural power philanthropy has to say “abortion is worthy of funding” and to say “we fund abortion” when they do. Our big dream is that some of the major funders who have stayed on the fence about abortion will jump off that fence into the abortion justice and reproductive justice movement’, said Katie Gillum, Executive Director at inroads.

‘Feminist movements have and continue to lead powerful efforts to secure access to abortions with little to no funding, oftentimes at great risk to their lives and livelihoods. This is unacceptable. It is time for funders to step up and show up’, Sandile Ndelu, Advocacy Manager at FRIDA, said.
